A Linsen North Road lane bar that splits the difference between a Japanese kissaten and a European bistro — duck confit and seafood risotto from the kitchen, tea-and-herb cocktails from the bar, open till 3am.

Tucked into a lane off Linsen North Road, Bar Kawa works the seam between two templates that rarely share a room — the Shōwa-era Japanese kissaten and the European bistro. Warm yellow light, retro fittings, a projector screen for whatever match is on: it reads as a neighbourhood spot first and a destination bar second. There's a proper counter if you want to talk to whoever's mixing, and sofa seating if you've come as a group settling in for the night. It runs late — doors stay open until 3am, every night of the week.

The kitchen

The food leans more European than the bar does. The headline plate is a duck confit — crisp skin, the leg pulling apart underneath. A scallop seafood risotto and a tomato-stewed beef tripe round out the richer end of the menu, and the pan-seared flank steak is the one to order if you came for meat. The outlier, and the most telling dish on the list, is a kissaten-style Neapolitan pasta — the ketchup-slicked spaghetti that Japanese coffee houses turned into comfort food. It's the clearest statement of what Kawa is going for: not fusion for its own sake, but two retro food cultures that already rhyme.

The bar

Cocktails here are built around tea, fruit and herbs rather than the classics. Three regulars worth asking for: a tequila drink cut with Oriental Beauty tea, a gin-and-cantaloupe number for warmer nights, and a matcha-and-gin pour that's the most Japanese thing on the list. Reckon on somewhere around NT$500–1,000 a head for an evening, depending on how much of the kitchen you work through.

Menu specifics noted March 2026 — bar lists rotate, so treat the named drinks as a read on the house style rather than a guarantee.
